When I start a new piece of jewelry, I don't have a fixed routine. Sometimes it's a preformed idea, a doodle in one of my many notebooks, or inspiration from a particular gemstone. Often, I'm guided by the materials in front of me. The intensity of a gemstone will dictate whether I go for a rugged or sleek design. I love working with contrasts between rough and smooth and different hues in the silver's patina. Once I know what the materials are telling me, it's time to get to work.
All of my silver jewelry is built up out of multiple different pieces. I do not use the lost wax method for any of my work. Instead, I use a silver mill to flatten out the silver into the desired thickness and a technique called reticulation to add unique textures. Reticulation heats the silver to create ripples similar to 'moiré fabric'. I also use hammering to give the jewelry a beautiful, dimpled surface, and fusing powdered silver to the surface, creating intricate textures. Finally, I apply liver of sulfur to give the jewelry a blueish-black oil patina that makes the contrasts pop.
